Planning a kitchen 2/3: layout plan and activity triangle

Redesigning your kitchen using the coquo concept means working in separate, self-contained areas, making it easier to integrate into the space. Once you have analyzed the room, it's time to draw up a layout plan. Sounds daunting, doesn't it? Don't worry, coquo is here to help. Just make sure you follow these two steps!

Step 2: The development plan

Here are the factors to consider when developing a good development plan.

HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES

Choosing your appliances before work begins will greatly facilitate the layout of your future kitchen. Knowing the dimensions of each appliance will make it much easier for you to select the right modules for your space. In addition, we recommend choosing freestanding refrigerators and stoves, not only to highlight the modular concept, but also to greatly simplify the design process for your kitchen!

WORK AREAS

In order to reduce the amount of walking around in your future kitchen, clearly define each work area.

  • First, consider grouping together the storage space needed for meal preparation (i.e., pantry and refrigerator).

  • This is the area that will see the most use in your future kitchen, so it's important to give it careful consideration when planning. Be sure to allow for sufficient counter space on either side of the sink, as well as a trash/recycling unit adjacent to the sink cabinet.

  • This area is usually located near the sink area. Ideally, allow for a minimum length of 36 inches, as this is essentially the main work surface in the kitchen. Generally, the prep area is located between the sink area (on the trash can side) and the cooking area.

  • Everyone can agree that the stove is the nerve center of the kitchen. It is therefore essential to have a good range hood to remove odors. Pots, pans, and cooking utensils should also ideally be located in this area.

Now that you have identified the key areas and your layout plan is complete, it is also important to determine the activity triangle for smooth task flow and better use of space.

Step 3: Activity Triangle

The activity triangle is the benchmark for kitchen ergonomics. Two details are important when determining the activity triangle:

  • Plan your movements between the key areas identified in the previous step. This will make your kitchen function much more naturally.

  • It is important to take into account existing plumbing, electrical, and ventilation outlets and installations when designing your plan. If you wish to make any changes, it is essential to consult a professional to validate the feasibility and, of course, verify the costs associated with moving the various elements.

There you have it! In no time at all, you've just drawn up your layout plan, taking into account the activity triangle. Stay tuned for the third and final article in this series. We'll cover the last step: planning the work.
