Kitchen planning 2/3: layout and activity triangle
The coquo kitchen concept means working as a separate, self-supporting zone, making it easier to integrate into the space. Once the room analysis has been completed, it's time to draw up the layout plan. Intimidating, isn't it? Don't worry, coquo is here for you. Just make sure you follow the next two steps!
Step 2: The layout plan
Here are the elements to consider when developing a good layout plan.
HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES
Choosing your appliances in advance will make it much easier to lay out your future kitchen. Knowing the dimensions of each appliance will make it much easier for you to select the right modules for your space. What's more, we recommend that you opt for freestanding refrigerators and freestanding ranges, not only to showcase the coquo modular concept, but also to considerably simplify the work involved in designing your kitchen!
WORK AREAS
To reduce the number of trips you have to make in your future kitchen, design each work area separately.
-
First of all, you'll need to bring together all the storage you'll need for meal preparation (i.e. pantry and fridge).
-
This is the area that will see the most use in your future kitchen, so it's important to give it a high priority when planning. Be sure to include sufficient counter space on either side of the sink, as well as a waste/recycling module adjacent to the sink cabinet.
-
This area is usually found near the laundry area. Ideally, it should be at least 36" long, since it's the main work surface in the kitchen. Generally speaking, the preparation area is located between the washing area (garbage can side) and the cooking area.
-
Everyone can agree that the stove is the nerve center of the kitchen. So it's imperative to provide a good hood to evacuate odors. Pots, pans and cooking utensils should also be kept in this area.
Now that you've identified the key areas and made your layout plan, it's also important to determine the triangle of activities for smooth workflow and better use of space.
Stage 3: Activity triangle
The activity triangle is the ergonomic benchmark for the kitchen. Two details are important when determining the activity triangle:
-
Plan your movements between the key zones identified in the previous step. This will make your kitchen run much more naturally.
-
It's important to take current plumbing, electrical and ventilation outlets and installations into account when laying out your plan. If you wish to make any changes, it's essential to call in a professional to validate feasibility and, of course, check the costs associated with moving the various elements.
